Reed, White Announce State Funding for 21 Local Fire and Ambulance Companies
HARRISBURG – More than $277,000 in funding is being awarded to 22 Indiana County fire and ambulance organizations through the 2017-18 Pennsylvania Fire Company and Volunteer Ambulance Service Grant Program, according to Rep. Dave Reed (R-Indiana) and Sen. Don White (R-41).

“These dedicated public servants are here for the residents of Indiana County in our time of greatest need, no matter the hour or the weather,” Reed said. “Their services are relied upon heavily and this program does a great job of offsetting the expenses they bear in serving the community.”

The funding comes from an ongoing grant program created by the Legislature and administered by the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency and Office of the State Fire Commissioner. All grants are generated from slot machine gaming proceeds, and not General Fund tax revenue.

“Approximately $6 billion would be needed in firefighting costs alone if every municipality in Pennsylvania had to pay what they now receive on a volunteer basis,” said White. “We need to do all we can to support our emergency responders and I’m glad this program exists to defray some of the costs.”

Grant awards can be used for construction or renovation of facilities, purchase or repair of equipment, training or debt reduction.
